Travel Insurance for Flight Delays and Cancellations
Understand delay, missed connection, cancellation, and abandonment sections, plus the evidence insurers often request.
Travel cover should be reviewed before money is committed to a trip. The important questions are usually about cancellation, medical treatment, assistance, baggage, exclusions, and evidence.
Delay benefits may begin only after a stated number of hours and may be paid as a fixed amount or reimbursement of reasonable expenses. Cancellation and abandonment are separate sections and may depend on a listed reason, documentation, and whether the event was known when the policy was bought.
For a missed connection, keep boarding passes, airline notices, receipts, and written confirmation of the delay. Follow the airline’s assistance process first where applicable, but do not discard evidence if you later need to make a claim.
Read exclusions for strikes, schedule changes, ordinary airline insolvency rules, weather, and insufficient connection time. Cover is policy-specific, so avoid promising that a delay will automatically produce a payment.
Quick checklist
- Compare the same limits and assumptions with each provider.
- Read exclusions, waiting periods, deductibles or excesses, and claim conditions.
- Keep the quote, schedule, wording, receipts, and communications together.
- Recheck the policy after a material change in your circumstances.
